After wrestling with different route options to begin this grand journey (let’s get this thing on the road already!), we finally settled on a short drive from Toronto to Owen Sound to kick things off. And like everything else we did, we couldn’t resist adding a little spontaneity to our trip.

The plan? A quick pit stop at Blue Mountain Village. Everyone we knew had been raving about it since we arrived in Toronto, so we were eager to see if it lived up to the hype.

Blue Mountain Village did not disappoint! It offered a perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll, complete with countless photo ops. I could easily picture how the village transforms in winter, with its cobblestone streets and cute patios adorned with fairy lights against a snowy backdrop—just magical!

With our curiosity satisfied and wanderlust ignited, we resumed our drive to Owen Sound. Now, Owen Sound might not be the first place that springs to mind for a road trip, but this little-known gem along the shores of Georgian Bay was a fantastic choice for our inaugural stop.

Why? Well:

• It’s only 2 hours away from Toronto, so not too far actually (really helped with the jitters that come with beginnings!).
• It’s close enough to Tobermory and Bruce Peninsula—two must-see spots on our list— but without the high rental prices of these tourist spots.
• Speaking of Tobermory vs Owen Sound – I was not very confident of working remotely from Tobermory for a whole week. This could be my paranoia working overtime, but what if the WiFi isn’t strong enough for my team meetings?! I mean it’s picturesque and everything, but no internet = no thank you.

Even if you’re not headed to Tobermory, Owen Sound has its own gorgeous views of Georgian Bay, with plenty of hiking trails and waterfalls. The city boasts a rich history and culture, along with a charming downtown filled with murals, gardens, cafés, a bustling farmers market, and a lovely sense of community.

Not bad, eh? To top these, our experience in Owen Sound may convince you a bit more as to why you should not be overlooking this city on any road trip itinerary.

So, we arrived in Owen Sound on a Friday afternoon after our smooth drive from Toronto. Armed with a fresh haircut, I set off to wander the cobbled streets of downtown, taking in the murals, neighbourhood gardens, quirky cafés, and unique shops. Just a short walk from the downtown area leads you to the shoreline, where the gentle waves of Georgian Bay welcome you.

Originally a fur trading post, Owen Sound quickly evolved into a bustling hub for shipbuilding and transportation, serving as a key port in the 19th century. Fun fact: the iconic Chi-Cheemaun ferry (which we plan to ride in the coming weeks!) docks in Owen Sound during the winter months.
